(17.12.12) IXYS Announces Robust Isolated Solid State Relay with Integrated Current Limit, Over-voltage Protection and Thermal Management

The CPC1593 Self-resetting, Triple Protection Scheme Protects Load and Itself

IXYS Integrated Circuits Division (formerly Clare, Inc.), announced the immediate availability of the CPC1593, the first in a new family of triple stage protection solid state relays (SSRs) that incorporate load current-limiting with over-voltage protection and thermal management. These bidirectional relays are designed to survive in the harshest operating environments off-AC line applications.

Clare IXYS CPC1593The CPC1593 normally open (1-Form-A) optically isolated SSR features a load voltage of 600V peak maximum, continuous load current of +/- 120mA maximum and an on-resistance of 35 Ohms maximum.   In a fault condition, the CPC1593 relay features a unique over-voltage protection that is activated when the voltage across the switch is greater than 21V and the device is in current limit.  The over-voltage protection deactivates the switch while allowing a restricted load current of less than 100uA to flow.  When the voltage across the switch falls below the over-voltage threshold, the switch resumes normal operation.  If the fault persists, the over-voltage response will repeat offering the best protection for the load and the switch itself.

Current limit specification for the CPC1593 in an AC/DC configuration is +/- 285mA maximum and 570mA in the DC configuration.  A thermal management circuit in the CPC1593 monitors overall die temperature in a fault condition and further restricts load current to protect the relay and load.

Key applications for this device are for advanced power management applications where the reduction of “vampire power” consumption is desired by turning off the AC power when not needed. Other applications include in-rush current control, power supplies, industrial and process controllers, solenoid and valve controls and HVAC.  The device is targeted for AC power line environments where fault conditions can persist for extended periods of time and where upon removal of the fault, return to normal operation is expected.  The relay is designed to survive extended power cross conditions.  The CPC1593 has UL, CSA and EN/IEC approval.

(26.4.11) Clare Introduces Industry’s  First Monolithic High-Voltage Isolated Analog Switch Array

320V Bidirectional Switch Capability for High-Voltage Interface Applications Powered by a 3.3V Digital Supply

Clare CPC7514ZClare, Inc. has announced the availability of the CPC7514Z Quad High- Voltage Isolated Analog Switch Array for use in industrial controls, instrumentation, automatic test equipment and telecom applications. The CPC7514Z ICs feature four independently controlled, 320V bidirectional normally open (1-Form-A) relays actuated by latched TTL logic-level control signals.  The monolithic silicon, which features high voltage DMOS structures and low voltage CMOS circuitry, is biased by a 3.3V power supply eliminating the requirement for external high-voltage supplies for proper operation.  Switch-output to logic-input isolation is +/- 320V.

Designed to provide flexible single-ended or differential access to high voltage networks, the CPC7514Z may also be configured as two sets of matched pair- switches for improved differential performance.  The switch pairs have an on-resistance matching specification of 0.8 Ohm maximum over the industrial temperature range of -40 to +85 degrees Celsius.

The individual switches have active current-limiting protection for fault events which limits the low frequency currents to 200mA.  Under serious high-power fault conditions, which may raise the IC junction temperature, a thermal shutdown protection feature is provided.  Between the initial current-limit and the thermal-shutdown events, a secondary, low-level, current-limit mode is provided to limit the power dissipation of the switches.  Protection continues until the fault is removed.  These features offer robust circuit protection in adverse application environments.

These switch arrays are fabricated using Clare’s bonded-wafer, silicon-on-insulator, BCDMOS process with trench isolation. Clare’s BCDMOS IC process has been used for many years in central office telecom equipment requiring long operational life (17+ years).   Clare’s integrated Line Card Access Switch (LCAS) ICs which are fabricated in the same BCDMOS process have replaced many electromechanical 2-Form-C relays, enabling higher density line card designs.

In addition to telecom, the CPC7514Z may be used as four normally open relays in automatic test equipment (ATE), industrial controls, battery monitoring/charging equipment and instrumentation applications.  The device may also interface directly with 110Vrms AC in switch applications replacing banks of electromechanical relays (EMRs) and driver circuitry for enhanced system integration.  Many applications will benefit from the elimination of a costly DC/DC converter block that is generally incorporated to bias the external EMRs.

(6.5.09) Clare Introduces the Most Rugged LCAS IC Family in the Industry

Clare LCAS IC FamilyNew 3rd Generation CPC769x Series Line Card Access Switch (LCAS) ICs Have Guaranteed 1500V/microsecond dV/dt Ratings for Central Office, Integrated Voice & Data and DSLAM Telephony Applications

Clare, Inc. announced the availability of their 3rd generation LCAS IC family. The CPC769x series has the highest guaranteed dV/dt ratings (1500V/microsecond minimum) for all on-chip bidirectional switching power devices. This best-in-class dV/dt robustness rating makes the CPC769x LCAS devices the most reliable solution for Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) switching applications, particularly in harsh environments that are prone to lightning or surge events, as well as in Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) applications.

The dV/dt enhancements for the CPC769x devices are made in Clare’s bonded-wafer, silicon-on-insulator, 330V BCDMOS process with trench isolation, which has been used for many years in central office telecom equipment requiring long operational life (20+ years). The integrated LCAS IC in SOIC packaging replaces several electromechanical 2-Form-C relays, enabling higher density line card designs.

The LCAS IC features digitally-controlled high-voltage switching devices used between a Subscriber Line Interface Chip (SLIC) and the PSTN tip/ring line. LCAS provides make/break switch functions for battery feed, ringing, line test-out, test-in, and ringing test. Each high-voltage switch has integrated current-limiting and thermal shutdown, which works in conjunction with a voltage clamp, providing superior protection for the SLIC. The LCAS IC requires only a +5V supply for operation and TTL logic-level inputs for control.

The CPC7695BA, CPC7695BB, CPC7695BC are 10-pole devices, each in a 28-pin SOIC package, providing all telephony functions listed above. The A- and C-suffix versions feature a voltage feedback protection SCR, while the B-suffix version uses clamping diodes. The C version has an additional test monitor state mode. Package option “Z” provides designers with a smaller 20-pin SOIC version for higher density boards.

The CPC7691BA and CPC7691BB are simple 4-pole devices, each in a 16-pin SOIC package, for simple tip and ring line break and ringing injection/return control. The A-suffix version features a voltage feedback protection SCR while the B-suffix version uses clamping diodes.
